The Benefits of Journaling

I have kept a journal since March of 2012, it is now July of 2018. I have in total 5 different books all filled out.

Yes, it has taken a lot of dedication but it’s so awesome and funny to look back to what I wrote when I was a freshman in HIGH SCHOOL! It’s so worth the time spent into journaling and I love taking time to myself to reflect on my week and days.

Most importantly, journals are personal; there is no right or wrong approach to keeping a journal. You don’t have to be a professional writer or even a good writer to journal. It is a tool for you.

The benefits of journaling range from enhancing creativity through to decreasing stress levels and alleviating depression. Let me encourage you—journaling is worth the time…

Benefits

There are many benefits of keeping a personal journal.

Journaling helps goal setting and measuring your progress. It helps by look over your daily life in order to fix or evaluate on yourself. Not only that but it helps strengthen your relationships.

Personally I feel empowered by writing all of my daily activities. I feel on top of my actions being able to look back and reflect on my day, week or anytime I journaled.

Therefore, journaling help reduce stress and keeps me focused on my goals. It helps to practice writing skills and creates personal space.

Lastly, journaling helps to develop self expression and helps with problem solving! All of these points are so healthy for ones wellbeing.

Obviously this is something that I highly recommend to anyone even considering starting their own journal.

Mental and Physical Health

Two main components that benefit someone for keeping a journal are the psychological and physical health benefits. A person who is writing about traumatic, stressful or emotional events has been found to result in longer-term improvements in both physical and psychological health. I think that's the coolest thing, who would have thought!?

Tracking Goals

Journaling is also an effective way to track your progress on your goals and in life activities.

One of the coolest things about journaling is looking back at all of your past experiences where it was good or bad and see how far you’ve come. I bet you don’t even realize how much you’ve grown over time! The only way to know for yourself is to write it down ;).

Inspiration and Motivation

Journaling creates inspiration and motivation in many ways. Every time you do a weekly or monthly review, you’ll feel naturally motivated to continue and see how much more you can achieve. Even the smallest of inclines can create massive alterations in your everyday life, and it's these little shifts that help to keep you on track and give you the ability to overcome any challenges that come your way.

Self Discipline

Another benefit is that journaling promotes self-discipline. Setting time to journal every day, whether it's in the morning or the evening, is an act of discipline. I have sometimes force myself to sit down and write whether or not I wanted to at that moment, as time goes on I was so happy I did that. By developing a daily journal habit, this will likely create a domino effect on other healthy habits.

Life Clarity

Exploring what is happening in your life, something that is stressing you out, or anything else by journaling can help bring about a sense of clarity or different perspective. It improves your mental wellbeing as well. Many studies have shown that excessive journaling is a route to healing; emotionally, physically, and psychologically. Keeping a journal also helps you to contemplate your deepest desires and helps you to get clear on your goals and what you want from your life.

Creativity

Journaling sparks your creativity as well! Another who would have though!? Regular writing can also help someone memorize important information and brainstorm new ideas. In other words, writing about your experiences not only helps someone process them, but it also helps the person see opportunities that may not have been apparent or obvious at first glance. Regular writing opens the door to those opportunities every time you record something.

Daily Gratitude

Realizing gratitude is so essential for someone's wellbeing. Daily journaling also serves to encourage daily gratitude. Strive to write a list of all the things you are grateful for every morning. It could be something as simple as the air that you breathe, the friendships that you treasure, as well as being thankful for new possibilities, opportunities, and connections. Practicing daily gratitude through a journal is a powerful exercise that opens you up to being in flow with the world around you.

Improves Day to Day Activities

Journaling also enhances someones day to day work. Also, it has its practical purposes and can serve as a reminder of the mistakes you may have made at work, the accomplishments that you are proud of and great moments you’ll want to remember. Aside from that it also keeps a routine for you to follow.

My Journaling Tips

There’s various styles of journaling, as well as tools, tips, and resources. In the end, it’s about what works for you. As the saying goes, there are different strokes for different folks!

Select the journal style that is ‘just right’ for you. Look up different kinds of journal styles, choosing the method that is most comparable to who you are. This is all about you! Aside from the traditional journal, you could keep a reading journal, a dream journal, a gratitude journal, a photo journal, an art journal, or even a bullet journal. And if you want to, feel free to mix it up. Get visual, colorful, and creative!

Invest in a beautiful journal. Splash out and buy yourself a pretty or inspiring journal or notebook filled with nice paper. You can even have more than one to suit different journaling styles. This way it will keep you intrigued to continue to write in it!

Buy some nice pens in different colors that sit well in your hand and move over the paper nicely. Nice pens make writing so much more enjoyable.

Keep your journal close. Have your journal by your bedside so you can record in it first thing in the morning or before going to sleep. If you wake in the middle of the night and want to jot something down, such as a dream or ideas, it will be easily within grasp. You can even take your journal wherever you go. Just be sure to keep it away from curious eyes.

Ditch perfection. It’s your journal. Write what you want in it, without a care in the world for spelling or grammar.

Remove distractions. Do yourself a favor by stepping away from your phone, laptop, TV… Enjoy the tranquillity, and lack of distractions which will allow you to focus.

Lastly, enjoy it
